Labour and birth
All of our maternity and children’s services are provided within a dedicated and custom-made women and children’s building. This is on the main hospital site at Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Scartho Road, Grimsby DN33 2BA. This facility incorporates children's services, gynaecology services and an obstetric ultrasound service. There is a café and a shop near the entrance. Vending machines are also available. Parking is available on site for a fee.
The hospital offers a labour, delivery, recovery and postnatal (LDRP) system of care; which allows a woman’s care to happen in the same en-suite room. Single and twin rooms are available for those families who require an extended stay.
The unit houses 37 beds, including a dedicated operating theatre, a family room, a high observation room, a room for mums-to-be with additional needs, a low risk room and a water-birth room. Partners are encouraged to stay overnight from birth to support the women and help take care of the baby. Shortly this service is to be extended to partners being able to stay from admission.
This allows women to have their baby in the same room they are admitted to, in a home-from-home environment, which has become hugely popular with families and partners who are actively encouraged to stay as a family throughout their inpatient stay.
At Grimsby in 2018 there were 2,445 deliveries with a 68% normal delivery rate.
The maternity unit at Scunthorpe is within Scunthorpe General Hospital, Cliff Gardens, DN15 7BH. On-site parking is available. There is a cafe in the main hospital building and vending machines throughout.
The hospital offers a combined antenatal and postnatal ward (26) and a central delivery suite (CDS). Ward 26 has a total of 26 beds and CDS has a total of eight beds. The obstetric theatres are based in the CDS and adjacent is the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The hospital has a pool room where water births are offered. The hospital has a normal delivery rate of 69.1%.
The hospital is situated on Woodland Avenue Goole DN14 6RX. On-site parking is available and there is a coffee shop in the main entrance, opened on weekdays only. The hospital offers a 'home from home' unit that is staffed by the community midwife team. Women who are low risk are supported to deliver at Goole District Hospital where midwifery-led care is provided. The hospital has a pool room where water births are offered and other birthing furniture is available, such as bean bags, mattresses, and birthing chairs.
